When it comes to health and wellness trends, there’s hardly a discussion which doesn’t include CBD (Cannabidiol) – one of many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.
And this is not surprising to know because CBD along with many other types of cannabis products have become fully legal in almost the entire UK. In addition, medical cannabis is now something that is also endorsed by the NHS Health and Wellbeing Program.
We explore how CBD can be an effective remedy for anxiety and how you can benefit from it.
“No THC” CBD for Stress and Anxiety
Our discussion is limited to fully tested CBD-only products or those containing very low amounts other cannabinoids and terpenes, including low to no THC – the main compound responsible for intoxication.
So, is CBD oil a good remedy for anxiety? First, let’s see what the research says:
A 2010 study revealed that CBD can cut down symptoms of social anxiety in those suffering from SAD – social anxiety disorder. It was discovered that CBD not only helped users feel better but also changed the way their systems responded when faced with anxiety.
In 2011, researchers looked at CBD’s potential for reducing public speaking anxiety and found that it helped reduce it.
A collection of 32 different rodent studies observed the effects of CBD as an anti-anxiety – just one was deemed “not useful”.
In 2015, an analysis of past studies was done and it was revealed that CBD oil has good potential to treat a variety of anxiety-related disorders such as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), panic disorder, SAD, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and GAD (generalised anxiety disorder).
A case study was done in 2016 to determine if CBD can reduce symptoms of PTSD and sleep disorders due to anxiety, specifically in a young patient who had a history of trauma. It was concluded that CBD helped reduce the child’s anxiety and improved sleep quality.
This study reported that CBD can help people with anxiety-induced insomnia.
How CBD lowers anxiety
While it’s unclear so as to exactly how CBD lowers anxiety – in a nutshell – it impacts the way the human body produces serotonin, when hit by a wave of anxiety. This neurotransmitter is associated with happiness and a sense of joy as well as fulfilment. So even though CBD does not necessary boost serotonin production directly, it changes the way the brain produces and regulates serotonin – a common mechanism on which many anti-anxiety drugs rely. Although with CBD, there are no side effects to report.
Is CBD right for you? This largely depends on what kind of anxiety you suffer from and what other remedies you have tried. However, according to the myriad of research-based studies done so far, it appears to be an effective remedy against the often debilitating disorder.
