Why puff math is tricky
Vaping is the most bioavailable way to take CBD โ 30 to 56% absorption versus 6โ15% for gummies. But it's also the hardest format to dose precisely because every puff is different. Puff length, device, coil resistance, e-liquid viscosity, even how cool the device is when you take the hit โ all change how much CBD you actually inhale.
This calculator gives you a realistic baseline. Plug in your specific device and e-liquid, choose your puff style honestly, and you'll get a working estimate of mg per puff. From there you can plan how many puffs deliver mild, moderate or strong effects โ and how long your bottle should last.
How the calculation works
The math behind the calculator combines three variables:
- E-liquid concentration in mg per ml. A 1000 mg / 30 ml bottle = 33.3 mg/ml.
- Device draw volume โ how much e-liquid is vaporised per puff. This varies dramatically by device type:
- Disposable pens: ~0.04 ml per puff
- Pod systems: ~0.05 ml per puff
- MTL refillable tanks: ~0.035 ml per puff
- Sub-ohm DTL tanks: ~0.08 ml per puff (largest draw)
- Puff style multiplier โ short (~2 sec) draws are about 70% of standard; long (~5 sec) draws are 140% of standard.
The formula: mg per puff = concentration (mg/ml) ร draw volume (ml) ร style multiplier. For a 1000mg/30ml e-liquid in a disposable pen with normal puffs: 33.3 ร 0.04 ร 1.0 = 1.33 mg per puff. The calculator does this in real time as you change any input.
Why precise puff dosing matters
Three reasons:
1. To compare formats. If your dosage calculator says you need 25 mg CBD daily and you're switching from gummies to vape, you need to know how many puffs equals 25 mg. Without the math, you'll either under-vape and feel nothing, or over-vape and waste money.
2. To budget your bottle. A ยฃ35 e-liquid that lasts 3 days because you're puffing recklessly is bad value. The same bottle stretched over 8 weeks at deliberate doses is excellent value. Knowing your puff count per day lets you forecast actual cost.
3. To stay under the FSA daily ceiling. The UK FSA recommends max 70 mg CBD per day. If each puff delivers ~2 mg, that's 35 puffs maximum โ easy to exceed if you're chain-vaping without tracking.
Why your device matters more than you think
Three vape devices loaded with the exact same e-liquid will deliver vastly different doses per puff. Here's why:
Disposable pens use small coils and atomisers designed for moderate vapour production. A typical 3-second puff vaporises around 0.04 ml โ about 1.3 mg from a 1000mg/30ml e-liquid. Disposables are also limited by their fixed battery, so puff size stays consistent throughout the device's life.
Pod systems use slightly larger coils. Puff volume is around 0.05 ml โ about 1.7 mg from the same e-liquid. The trade-off: pods produce thicker vapour and slightly stronger throat hit.
MTL (mouth-to-lung) refillable tanks โ like the Uwell Caliburn or Vaporesso XROS โ use higher-resistance coils with smaller draws. Closer to traditional cigarette puffing. Volume around 0.035 ml = ~1.2 mg per puff. Best for flavour-faithful, controlled dosing.
Sub-ohm DTL (direct-to-lung) tanks are the cloud-chaser format. Massive draws of 0.08 ml or more per puff. From a 1000mg/30ml e-liquid that's ~2.7 mg per puff. Five puffs and you've taken a moderate daily dose. These devices are not recommended for CBD โ they over-deliver and waste expensive e-liquid as visible vapour.
For CBD specifically, the sweet spot is MTL pods or refillable MTL tanks. Enough draw to feel the hit, controlled enough to dose precisely.
How to control your puff style
Puff style is the variable you have most control over, and it has the biggest impact on per-puff dose. Three guidelines:
- Short, deliberate puffs. 2 seconds, gentle pull. Best for flavour and microdosing. Use this for daytime productivity-focused vaping.
- Normal puffs. 3 seconds, steady inhale. The default. Best for evening relaxation and standard dosing.
- Long, deep puffs. 5+ seconds, full inhale. Strongest hit. Use only for acute moments (panic, sudden pain). Don't make this your default.
Most users default to longer puffs than they realise. Try this: time your next puff against your phone clock. You'll often be at 4โ5 seconds when you thought you were at 2โ3. Shorter, more frequent puffs deliver the same total CBD with better control.
Vape puffs vs oil drops โ equivalents
Once you know your per-puff mg, you can translate vape doses into oil-drop equivalents:
- 1 puff at 1.7 mg โ 1 drop of 1000mg/30ml oil
- 5 puffs โ 5 drops โ ~8 mg total
- 15 puffs โ 15 drops โ ~25 mg total
This equivalence isn't perfect because vape has higher bioavailability โ 5 puffs of CBD actually hits harder than 5 oil drops despite identical mg. But for total intake tracking, the math is close enough.
Oliver's vape dosing protocol
- First session: 1 puff, wait 10 minutes. CBD vape onset is fast (3โ10 min). Don't redose impatiently.
- Acute use only. Vape is your fire extinguisher for sudden stress, pain or panic. Daily background dosing should be oils or gummies.
- Cap daily puffs. Calculate your daily max in advance based on this calculator. Stay under it.
- Take temperature-aware draws. A cold device delivers less than a warm one. The first puff after charging is weakest.
- Replace coils on schedule. Old coils deliver inconsistent doses. Plan for 10โ14 days per coil at typical use.
How many puffs in a typical bottle
A 30 ml bottle of e-liquid contains roughly 600 puffs at standard 0.05 ml per puff. At moderate use (8 puffs per day), that's about 75 days โ two and a half months. At heavy use (25+ puffs per day), the same bottle lasts under 4 weeks.
Understanding bottle lifespan helps you assess value. A ยฃ35 bottle that lasts 75 days = ~ยฃ0.47/day, which is cheaper than most CBD methods. The same bottle gone in 25 days = ยฃ1.40/day โ significantly more expensive than equivalent oil dosing.
Oliver's bottom line: Vape is the most precise CBD format if you take the time to know your numbers. Calculate your per-puff dose, set a daily ceiling, take deliberate short draws. You'll consume less, feel more, and stretch your e-liquid budget much further than chain-vapers ever do.
